James A. Moffatt

Born in Almonte, Ontario in 1949, James Moffatt was raised in the eastern Ontario cities of Cornwall and Ottawa.  After graduating from Carleton University in 1971 with a B.A. in Sociology, Jim worked in community development and, subsequently, in the Federal Court of Canada.  Returning to Carleton to obtain his B.A. Honours in Sociology and Psychology, he entered the Masters programme in Psychology at Carleton in 1976.  In 1977, Jim was awarded a Pickering Internship at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario where he worked in the Psychology Department conducting psycho-educational assessments with children and doing individual and family psychotherapy.
During his first year of graduate school, Jim was introduced to G.I. Gudjieff’s ‘fourth way’ teaching by his friend, Christopher Holmes.  He served as Christopher’s research assistant for his doctoral dissertation which set forth a model of consciousness derived from Gurdjieff’s teaching and applicable to the psychotherapy process.  After dropping out of graduate school, Jim continued to assist Dr. Holmes by editing his manuscripts that forwarded his evolving, esoterically based model of consciousness.  While working as a bartender, child and youth worker, and paralegal for the past twenty-five years, James Moffatt has written a spiritual autobiography and exposition of “the fourth way”–But I’ll Know My Song Well–in which he chronicles the first five years in which he and Christopher Holmes worked together to understand Gurdjieff’s teaching and its significance for modern thought.  In addition, Jim has also written a second book about Gurdjieff–An ‘Alien Intelligence’–in which he attempts to “come to terms with Gurdjieff and his work” from a novel and provocative perspective.
As he continues to assist Dr. Holmes with his writing, James Moffatt has begun work on a projected two volume project–The Problem of God’s Contracting Universe–in which he will provide an exposition of Christopher Holmes’ work and chronicle its evolution, as well as critically examining its significance in terms of contemporary psychology and science.  This undertaking is in keeping with Jim’s fundamental aim in writing about mystical and esoteric teachings: that is, to contribute to dispelling and overcoming modern prejudices and blindness regarding these profound teachings and their importance in furthering humans’ understanding of the divine nature of their being and the possibilities inherent in that realization.
Jim lives in Toronto, where he owns and operates a paralegal business, writes, and keeps an eye on a number of cats with whom he co-habitates.
Jim's discussion of science and mysticism,

and a historic account of Christopher's early formulation of

The Problem of God's Contracting Universe

"... by basing his investigation of "God’s contracting universe" on mystical and esoteric teachings, Christopher was attempting to reformulate what was essentially an ancient argument for and method of discovering God.  Of course, Carl Sagan never considered the possibility that mystical and esoteric teachings might lead to objective knowledge because, quite simply, he did not know or understand what they entail. ... Sagan, who describes this transitional period in history–as that in which we begin in wonder and end in understanding–never suspects that there are ancient teachings which are every bit as profound and meaningful in advancing humanity’s quest for knowledge as the most advanced ideas in contemporary science.... 'An Alien Intelligence':

G.I.Gurdjieff, The Fourth Way &
'The Three-Brained Beings of the Planet Earth'

Once upon a time ... in a place far, far away ... I was introduced to an extraordinary “esoteric” teaching–a system of ideas and practices designed to develop one’s consciousness and being through a process of psycho-spiritual transformation.  In the first year of studying this teaching’s  profoundly sophisticated psychological aspects, I lived through an annus mirabilis–a period of fantastic revelations–which had the effect of thoroughly challenging and overturning my grasp of the meaning of “all and everything.”  Thus, against all odds and expectations, my understanding of the nature of my being and the possibilities of its development was fundamentally, irrevocably, and miraculously altered.

"Skeptics and other critics routinely and blindly dismiss mysticism with the facile excuse that mystics offer nothing of intellectual substance to test or critique. Christopher Holmes’ accounts and descriptions of the esoteric mystical tradition clearly documents that such claims are absurd. Furthermore, his development of a model of consciousness, which is derived from mystical teachings, and his identification of zero points as the dynamic nexus linking the material and metaphysical realms certainly sets forth a theoretical position that is, at once, both amenable to scientific scrutiny and testing, and possesses implications for many of the most challenging questions confronting modern physics. And for that reason, I would submit that anyone who purports to be concerned with the study of consciousness should and must thoroughly acquaint himself or herself with Christopher Holmes’ remarkable, ground-breaking book, The Heart Doctrine."

"...  if Christopher Holmes’ articulation of ‘the heart doctrine’ had been restricted to citing and commenting upon those awe-inspiring teachings, he would have accomplished a great deal by establishing the foundation of an alternative paradigm to that which dominates contemporary approaches to the study of consciousness.  However, when he introduces the mysterious concept of “the zero point,” his arguments take on a level of significance which is, in my opinion, unparalleled in modern consciousness research. ..."

On Madame Blavatsky’s Baboon

or How To Wiseacre, Lie, &
Document Your Ignorance For Fun & Profit

Review by James Moffatt

Washington’s characterization of Gurdjieff
as being “fond of threes” is,
in my opinion, akin to writing that Einstein was “into light” or that Heinsenberg “was beset by uncertainty.”
- James A. Moffatt -

"Madame Blavatsky’s Baboon is nothing more and nothing less than a lie:
a fantastic tale, which is so far removed from the reality of that which it purports to explain,
that it is nothing more than a bedtime story to be told to children who welcome sleep’s reassuring comfort.  It is a new version of a familiar story: one that has been told and re-told by rational and reasonable people whenever they have been confronted by those mystics and misfits who, strangely enough, have always seemed to be amongst us.  In order to deal with these outsiders’ crazy ideas and grandiose claims–those that challenge the authenticity of a well-reasoned, orderly understanding of ourselves and the Universe–reasonable and rational people must rid themselves of these alien creatures."

From Jonathan Cott’s Visions & Voices, 1987

Jonathan Cott: Cosmologists have speculated that at the first explosive moment of the birth of the universe, everything that exists–or ever will exist–was contained within a single spark of energy, smaller than an atom’s nucleus and ruled by a single primordial law.

Rabbi Lawrence Kushner: One dot–a point of light.  Perhaps the fact that contemporary cosmologists talk about a dimensionless point of light from which all being sprang and that the Kabbalists long ago came up with precisely the same image (in the fourteenth century, Moses de Leon spoke of “a hidden supernal point” whose “primal center is the innermost light, of a translucence, subtlety, and purity beyond comprehension”) means that this awareness comes from something we all carry within us.  We’re walking Torahs ... if we could just shut up and listen to it.  As Rabbi Dov Baer of Mezritch said: “I shall teach you the best way to say Torah.  You must cease to be aware of yourselves.  You must be nothing but an ear which hears what the universe of the word is constantly saying within you.” (page 209)

Jonathan Cott has been Jim's life long ideal imagined audience,
and mentor
