6.  FOHAT:  Cosmic Electricity

& the Seven Messengers of Will

     Within The Secret Doctrine, understanding the role and significance of Fohat is a key to understanding the mysteries of cosmogenesis and the relationship of the laws of physics to ancient metaphysics.  Blavatsky writes:

But just as the opposite poles of subject and object, spirit and matter, are but aspects of the One Unity in which they are synthesized, so, in the manifested Universe, there is “that” which links spirit to matter, subject to object.

            This something, at present unknown to Western speculation, is called by the occultists Fohat.  It is the “bridge’ by which the “Ideas” existing in the “Divine Thought” are impressed on Cosmic Substance as the “Laws of nature.’’  Fohat is thus the dynamic energy of Cosmic Ideation; or, regarded from the other side, it is the intelligent medium, the guiding power of all manifestation, the “Thought Divine” transmitted and made manifest through the Dhyan Chohans, the Architects of the visible World. Thus from Spirit, or Cosmic Ideation, comes our consciousness; from Cosmic Substance the several vehicles in which that consciousness is individualised and attains to self—or reflective-consciousness; while Fohat, in its various manifestations, is the mysterious link between Mind and Matter, the animating principle electrifying every atom into life.  (1888, p. 16)

Just as a human is described as having a body, soul and spirit, so also is the Cosmos.  Fohat is that agent of spirit which ensouls the material body of the cosmos; “the animating principle electrifying every atom into life.”  Fohat is the “dynamic energy of Cosmic Ideation” and embodies the intelligence of the spiritual builders, or the Seven Luminous Sons within the medium of space.

 V. 1 - THE PRIMORIAL SEVEN, THE FIRST SEVEN BREATHS OF THE DRAGON OF WISDOM, PRODUCE IN THEIR TURN FROM THEIR HOLY CIRCUMGYRATING BREATHS
THE FIERY WHIRLWIND. 

             The PRIMORDIAL SEVEN each entails a modification of the fundamental Ceaseless Breath.  These are the first born from the Darkness and Matrix of Non-Being.  The Seven Breaths are ‘circumgyrating,’ indicating that they are vortices spinning around a centre.  These in turn produce “the Fiery Whirlwind.”  FOHAT is the fiery whirlwind. Fohat links the seven primary realms of spiritual creation above to the seven realms of material nature below. 

            Whereas modern science has historically focused on the duality of matter and energy, Blavatsky depicts a trinity of forces–of Divine Thought and Cosmic Substance, and Fohat that bridges these worlds—the animating principle electrifying every atom or living being in life.  The Secret Doctrine is thus consistent with the triune distinction made between matter, energy and intelligence as emerging in quantum information theory and the holographic paradigm.  Science is beginning to recognize information as a ‘third force’ within the medium of space, in addition to the dual matter and energy. 

Fohat is the energetic principle, the fundamental cosmic electromagnetism and it conveys the influence of divine and spiritual intelligences upon matter.

Fohat runs the Manus’ (or Dhyan-Chohans’) errands, and causes the ideal prototypes to expand from within without—viz, to cross gradually, on a descending scale, all the planes from the noumenon to the lowest phenomenon, to bloom finally on the last into full objectivity—the acme of illusion, or the grossest matter.  (p. 63)

 

It is through Fohat that the ideas of the Universal Mind are impressed upon matter. Some faint idea of the nature of Fohat may be gathered from the appellation “Cosmic Electricity” sometimes applied to it; but to the commonly known properties of electricity must, in this case, be added others, including intelligence.  (p. 85)

 Modern scientists do not conceive that the laws and phenomena of Nature might embody a ‘third force’ of Divine Intelligence, although they conceive of ‘information’ as latent within the space of the quantum vacuum.  According to Blavatsky, Fohat is the Messenger of the Primordial Sons of Light and Life, the Dhyan-Chohans, running their errands and impressing their divine thoughts and intelligence into the seven realms of material creation below.

            Just as there are seven Luminous Sons or seven circumgyrating Breaths, and seven primordial matters latent in the Eternal Parent Space, Fohat is also sevenfold and described as having seven sons.  Blavatsky writes:

 Fohat … is One and Seven, and on the Cosmic plane is behind all such manifestations as light, heat, sound, adhesion, etc., etc., and is the “spirit” of ELECTRICITY, which is the Life of the Universe.  As an abstraction, we call it the ONE LIFE; as an objective and evident Reality, we speak of a septenary scale of manifestation, which begins at the upper rung with the One Unknowable CAUSALITY, and ends as Omnipresent Mind and Life immanent in every atom of Matter.  Thus, while science speaks of its evolution through brute matter, blind force and senseless motion, the Occultists point to intelligent LAW and sentient LIFE, and add that Fohat is the guiding Spirit of all this. … the “Messenger of the primordial Sons of Life and Light.” (p.139)

 Fohat is Cosmic Electricity–the energetic and vivifying principle linking Cosmic Spirit (the Intelligence principle) to Cosmic Matter (the Material principle).  The Seven Luminous Sons act through the seven Fohats which convey their influences into the seven realms of creation.  Blavatsky explains:

 “Matter is the vehicle for the manifestation of soul on this plane of existence, and soul is the vehicle on a higher plane for the manifestation of spirit, and these three are a trinity synthesized by Life, which pervades them all.”  (S.D. I p. 49)

 Just as a human being has a three-fold nature–of body, soul and spirit, so also does the Universe or Kosmos. 

Blavatsky elaborates upon the nature of Fohat and his seven Sons:

 Fohat, the constructive Force of Cosmic Electricity … has seven sons who are his brothers; … The Seven “Sons-brothers,” however, represent and personify the seven forms of Cosmic magnetism called in practical Occultism the “Seven Radicals,” whose co-operative and active progeny are, among other energies, Electricity, Magnetism, Sound, Light, Heat, Cohesion, etc.  Occult Science defines all these as Super-sensuous effects in their hidden behavior, and as objective phenomena in the world of senses….  (p. 145)

 The Sons of Fohat are the Messengers of the primordial Seven Sons of Light and Life, the Elohim or Seven Creators.  Fohat is Cosmic Magnetism and Electricity in its varied forms—all variations of One force.  Blavatsky’s formulation of all the forces of nature as variations of one fundamental force represents exactly the type of unified theory that contemporary physicists regard as the Holy Grail of science. 

            Stanza V of the Books of Dzyan depicts the role of FOHAT and his SEVEN SONS, also referred to as the LIPIKA, and their roles in cosmic creation:

 2.  THEY MAKE OF HIM THE MESSENGER OF THEIR WILL.  THE DZYU BECOME FOHAT, THE SWIFT SON OF THE DIVINE SONS WHOSE SONS ARE THE LIPIKA, RUNS CIRCULAR ERRANDS.  FOHAT IS THE STEED AND THE THOUGHT IS THE RIDER. HE PASSES LIKE LIGHTNING THROUGHT THE FIERTY CLOUDS; TAKES THREE, AND FIVE, AND SEVEN STRIDES THROUGH THE SEVEN REGIONS ABOVE, AND THE SEVEN BELOW.  HE LIFTS HIS VOICE, AND CALLS THE INNUMERABLE SPARKS, AND JOINS THEM.

3.  HE IS THEIR GUIDING SPIRIT AND LEADER. WHEN HE COMMENCES WORK, HE SEPARATES THE SPARKS OF THE LOWER KINGDOM THAT FLOAT AND THRILL WITH JOY IN THEIR RADIANT DWELLINGS, AND FORMS THERE-WITH THE GERMS OF WHEELS. HE PLACES THEM IN THE SIX DIRECTIONS OF SPACE, AND ONE IN THE MIDDLE—THE CENTRAL WHEEL.

4.  FOHAT TRACES SPIRAL LINES TO UNITE THE SIXTH TO THE SEVENTH—THE CROWN; AN ARMY OF THE SONS OF LIGHT STANDS AT EACH ANGLE, AND THE LIPIKA IN THE MIDDLE WHEEL.  THEY SAY: THIS IS GOOD, THE FIRST DIVINE WORLD IS READY, THE FIRST IS NOW THE SECOND. THEN THE “DIVINE ARUPA” REFLECTS ITSELF IN CHHAYA LOKA, THE FIRST GARMENT OF THE ANUPADAKA.

6.     THUS WERE FORMED THE RUPA AND THE ARUPA: FROM ONE LIGHT SEVEN LIGHTS; FROM EACH OF THE SEVEN, SEVEN TIMES SEVEN LIGHTS.  THE WHEELS WATCH THE RING. . . .

Fohat is One and sevenfold, as are the Primordial Seven and the Aether of Space.  Fohat forms the germs of wheels—with a central wheel surrounded by six additional wheels—illustrated by the “Seed of Life” symbol, essentially a variation on the Star of David. 

    Fohat, running along the seven principles of AKASA, acts upon manifested substance or the One Element, … and by differentiating into various centres of Energy, sets in motion the law of Cosmic Evolution, which, in obedience to the Ideation of the Universal Mind, brings into existence all the various states of being in the manifested Solar System.

                  The Solar System, brought into existence by these agencies, consists of Seven Principles, like everything else within these centres. Such is the teaching of the trans-Himalayan Esotericism. …  (S.D., I, p. 110)

 Both the higher AKASA—the Aether of the Seven Skinned Eternal Parent Space and the lower Solar Ether are sevenfold. 

            As Blavatsky describes the role of Fohat, we can understand its relationship to ideas in modern science and philosophy.  She explains:

 Fohat, then is the personal electric vital power, the transcendental binding Unity of all Cosmic Energies, on the unseen as on the manifested planes, the action of which resembles—on an immense scale—that of a living Force created by WILL …   Fohat is not only the living Symbol and Container of that Force, but is looked upon by the Occultists as an Entity—the forces he acts upon being cosmic, human and terrestrial, and exercising their influence on all those planes respectively.  … On the Cosmic, it is present in the constructive power that carries out, in the formation of things—from the planetary system down to the glow-worm and simple daisy—the plan in the mind of nature, or in the Divine Thought, with regard to the development and growth of that special thing. He is, metaphysically, the objectified thought of the gods; the “Word made flesh,” … the active force in Universal Life.  (S. D. I, p. 111)

 Fohat is “metaphysically” the “objectified thought of the gods.” 

In her model of intelligent design, Blavatsky does not consider a bearded patriarch sitting on a throne talking to the flowers, but she does speak of the Elohim or the Seven Luminous Sons, who first emerge from the matrix of Darkness and non-Being, the builders of form from formlessness.  Fohat serves to convey the Will and intelligence manifest from the seven realms above (the realms of Divine Intelligence and Mind) to the seven below (the seven planes of spiritual and material manifestation). Fohat emerges at zero point levels as the living Force or electric vital power within any living breathing being or Cosmos.

Each world has its Fohat, who is omnipresent in his own sphere of action. But there are as many Fohats as there are worlds, each varying in power and degree of manifestations.  The individual Fohats make one Universal, Collective Fohat ….  (p. 143)

 Fohat is described as “the transcendental binding Unity of all Cosmic Energies.”   Fohat is also a source of gravitational influence established within higher dimensional Space of one’s own heart holding it all together.   Fohat serves to bind living cosmos together and convey the influences of higher dimensional dynamics into the manifest realm below.  The Hearts of living beings are their LIFE centres, wherein we might find Deity, which is within “every point of the universe.”   Fohat is also the “vital electric force that leaves the body at death” (p. 673), whether a Kosmos or a Son.
